SANATORIUM presents “Metamorphoses from Causal Relations to Indexical Signs” curated by Yağız Özgen as artist and featuring works by Hasan Akdaş, Şahsenem Altıparmak, Irmak Canevi, Burak Kabadayı, and Ali Miharbi between the dates April 29 – June 5, 2022.
The artists who contribute to the exhibition with their works look at the causal relations between events that are the building blocks of the world surrounding the human being. By means of a language system with an indexical character that they have created, each artist addresses the change in objects by focusing on a specific phenomenon peculiar to their own field of interest. These phenomena vary from the material nature of television to an artist’s individual life, from the emergence of the human-specific articulate language during the evolution of vitality to the total energy amount that is spent by the electronic equipment in an exhibition. Depending on the dynamic structure of the phenomena that they are interested in, the works of the artists do not appear as stable objects which maintain their permanence throughout a certain time period. These works appear as a series of events connected to each other through causal relations and as indexical signs which exhibit their own material nature. Thus, instead of producing signs which represent the change in objects, each artist creates indexical signs which directly identify with this change. This exhibition aims at looking at the metamorphoses of the objects through the signs which the artists have obtained from the dynamic material of the world.

Hasan Akdaş
Hasan Akdaş (1993) questions how signs are produced, what kind of networks they operate with and their effects. The artist's works might be seen as signs specific to and produced with events. Concepts such as "mapping", "a-signifying signs", "diffraction", and "event" open Akdaş's work to discussion on a theoretical basis. With actual and potential effects, video technology joins the artworks to support the artist's practice.

Şahsenem Altıparmak
Şahsenem Altıparmak (1997), working on digital arts in general, tries to create a field of inquiry by examining the connection between the digital world and reality. She started her art education at Dokuz Eylül Fine Arts Painting Department and then continued by transferring to Marmara University Fine Arts Painting Department. After completing her undergraduate education here, she continues her master's degree in Painting at Marmara University Fine Arts Institute. She took part in various group exhibitions in Istanbul and continues her productions.
Şahsenem Altıparmak (1997), working on digital arts in general, tries to create a field of inquiry by examining the connection between the digital world and reality. She started her art education at Dokuz Eylül Fine Arts Painting Department and then continued by transferring to Marmara University Fine Arts Painting Department. After completing her undergraduate education here, she continues her master's degree in Painting at Marmara University Fine Arts Institute. She took part in various group exhibitions in Istanbul and continues her productions.
Irmak Canevi
Irmak Canevi’s (1971) process has its origin in an ongoing activity: the rigorous redecoration of his studio. Content in passage is suspended and entrapped to make still-lives, which then become souvenirs from a singular time and place. He grows worlds that are places of conflict, transformation, and refuge for experimentation and play. He plays and the play makes work. Received his BA in painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, and an MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design, also in painting. He has been artist-in-resident at the Vermont Studio Center (2011) and more recently at PLOP in London (2019). Canevi is also the founder of the TekTrope Artist Residency in Istanbul. His work has been shown internationally in exhibitions, including Western Exhibitions, Chicago; Gelman Gallery, RISD Museum, Providence; Bellevue Arts Museum, Seattle; 111 Front Street Galleries, New York; Krank, Mixer, 5533, and Apartment Project, Istanbul.

Graduated from Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts in 2014, his latest solo exhibition “Static Shifts Dynamic Rifts’’ took place in AVTO, İstanbul in 2021. Meandering between social, technological, historical and contemporary perspectives, he delves into the evolution of complex systems, our symbiotic relationship formed with artificial objects and the materialization of knowledge with a playful attitude. Miharbi works in İstanbul.

Yağız Özgen
Born in Istanbul in 1987, the artist was admitted to the Painting Department of Marmara University’s Fine Arts Faculty in 2005 and graduated in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree. The same year, he started the master’s program and graduated in 2012 with the dissertation entitled “New Technology and the Aesthetics of Digital Representation: Chris Cunningham”. The artist completed his Proficiency in Art (PhD) program at Marmara University Painting Department and continues to teach theoretical courses at this university. Özgen held four solo exhibitions entitled “C://Still_Life”, “Spectrum”, “Metadata” and ''Instructions'', respectively, since his bachelor’s degree. His works were part of important group exhibitions such as “Systems/Visibility”, "aRb", “Hypologie” and “28th Contemporary Artists Exhibition”. He took part in the artist residency programs of Borusan Contemporary in 2011 and 2013 and of Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf in 2018. Since 2011 the artist participates in the Conceptual Art Events of the Definition of Art Group and continues his artistic activities and theoretical studies in Istanbul.
