SANATORIUM presents Gizem Akkoyunoğlu's third solo exhibition titled "Silhouettes of Power" between the dates February 23 and April 6, 2024. In the exhibition, Akkoyunoğlu focuses on themes like the uncanny and the boundaries of the sublime by crafting spaces and events that blur the line between reality and fantasy.
"Silhouettes of Power" consists of charcoal on paper works in which the artist reconstructs the myths of the past and shows them through implicit narratives. The subject of witchcraft, which Akkoyunoğlu researched during the exhibition process, manifests itself in her works with symbolic indicators between reality and myth. The artistic elements in the exhibition use witch symbols that become metaphors for the alchemical transformation of social expectations throughout history, while atmospheric landscapes symbolize the complex navigation of a world that at times attempts to define and limit female identity.
The exhibition showcases reflection on the traditional narratives surrounding femininity and the enigmatic forces of power that shape our collective consciousness. The uncanny acts as a silent guide, subtly challenging our understanding of reality. Although not being physically present in the works, witches are treated as an example of ancient wisdom through different signifiers.
"Silhouettes of Power" focuses on enigmatic symbols and silhouettes of power that reflect unspoken struggles. The exhibition includes Akkoyunoğlu's work on alchemy, the uncanny and myths, using the fantastic as a method to explore these themes.
