SANATORIUM will host the exhibition “Systems / Visibility” consisting of works of Yağız Özgen and Alex Anikina and curated by Yasemin Keskintepe between October 9 and December 9, 2017.
“Systems / Visibility” looks into the poetics of digital realms and its fluid shifting cartography. The exhibition explores a world of images constructed by the materiality of bits and bytes, which derive from the generative landscapes of the digital. The works of the two artists in the exhibition Alex Anikina and Yagiz Özgen assume a new sensibility towards technological systems and their material constitution. Figurations of images that are usually not visible to the human eye will be displayed in their multiplicity of formations.
Alex Anikina will also present a talk performance titled “Chronic Film” on the opening reception, offering an experience of a collective meditation, in which the refusal of images to figurate on the screen enters in a dialogue with the mental imagery conjured by spoken word.
About the artists:
Yağız Özgen
Born in 1987 in Istanbul, the artist studied at the Painting Department of Marmara University's Fine Arts Faculty between 2005-2009 and graduated with a bachelor's degree. He started his master's degree in 2009 and graduated in 2012 with the dissertation entitled ”New Technology and the Aesthetics of Digital Representation: Chris Cunningham”. The artist continues to study at the Proficiency in Art program at the Painting Department of Marmara University. Since he received his bachelor's degree, he has held three solo exhibitions entitled “C://Still_Life”, “Spectrum”, and “Metadata”, respectively. Among the group exhibitions that he participated in are the following: “Hypologie”, "aRb", and “28th Today's Artists Exhibition". Participating regularly in the Conceptual Art Events of the Definition of Art Group since 2011, Özgen continues his activities and conceptual studies in art, in Istanbul.
Alex Anikina
Alex Anikina (b. 1989 in Kolomna, Russia) is an artist and researcher, currently a PhD candidate at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her artistic practice explores non-human subjectivity, machine aesthetics, the life of medium and technologies of knowledge through experimental film and language-based works. Anikina participated in VI Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, IV and V Moscow International Biennales for Young Art; screened at HKW, Berlin, Anthology Film Archives, New York, NCCA Moscow and participated in festivals internationally. Her works are held in the collection of National Centre for Contemporary Arts, Moscow. Awards include Best Experimental Short at London Independent Film Festival 2014, Video Art Arte Laguna prize 2016, shortlist for International Emerging Artist Award of Dubai.
